Jacob Jordaens (Flanders 1593‑1678). Follower of, 17th century. Prometheus bound. Oil on relined canvas, 156 x 113 cm.
The painting follows the larger prototype in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, inv. no. WEM 1044 from 1642.
The present unrecorded and well preserved painting takes its composition from Jacob Jordaens painting of 1642 in the Wallraf-Richartz Musuem in Cologne. While the quality is obvious inferior to the prototype, it is still at such a level that it is perhaps a studio replica. Indeed, by taking up the subject, Jordaens followed in the footsteps of his famous colleague Rubens, who had painted the subject some thirty years earlier, in the painting now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
